ESTABLISHMENT

The Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri was initially established as the College of Technology, Owerri by Edict No. 16 dated 1st April, 1978. In 1987, it was renamed, The Polytechnic by the Imo State Government. The Institution was taken over by the Federal Government in April 1993 and is now governed by the Federal Polytechnics Act to perform the following functions:

(a) To provide full-time or part-time courses of instruction and training:
(i) in technology, applied science, commerce and management, and
(ii) in such other fields of applied learning relevant to the needs of the development of Nigeria in the areas of Industrial and Agricultural production and distribution and for research in the -development and adaptation of techniques as the Council may from time to time determine.
(b) To arrange conferences, seminars and study groups relative to the fields of learning specified in paragraph (a) of this subsection (1);
(c) To perform such functions as in the opinion of the Council may serve to promote the objectives of the Polytechnic.


The Motto of the Polytechnic is: “Knowledge and Skill for Service”

LOCATION
The institution is located in Nekede about five kilometres from the metropolitan capital of Imo State, Owerri. The campus comprises some 138 hectares of land.

MODE OF ADMISSION
Admission of students into the Polytechnic for the Higher National Diploma (Morning), the National Diploma (Evening), the Pre-National Diploma (Morning), the National Diploma (Weekend) and Certificate programmes will be by direct entry based mainly on merit by ranking the entry qualifications of candidates.

Candidates for admission are required to possess the minimum entry requirements as stipulated by the Polytechnic. Prospective candidates are therefore advised to ensure that they meet both the general and departmental requirements before applying for admission.

The HND (Morning) last for two years while the HND (Weekend) and ND(Evening/Weekend) programmes normally last three years respectively. Students who successfully complete the National Diploma programme will be required to have gained at least one year relative post ND working experience in a recognised industry/establishment before they can apply for admission into the Higher National Diploma Programme.

The Pre-ND Programme is designed to last one academic year. On successful completion, and subject to vacancies, students may be allowed to proceed to the approved ND programmes.


A. HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) – 2 YEARS
1. GENERAL MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

1. Candidates must hold the minimum entry requirement for ND programme in the specified field
2. They must possess the National Diploma of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri or the equivalent from recognised institutions in the appropriate discipline with minimum of Lower Credit Pass (CGPA 2.50).
3. Candidates with Pre-ND and National Diploma in AC, BAM, SA, EE, ME, FT, CS, STA, from other institutions must have a minimum CGPA of 2.75 at ND level
4. For candidates with pass level from the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede with CGPA not below 2.00 points, a minimum of two years post ND cognate working experience is required.

3. DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
Candidates should arrange with their previous institutions to send their academic transcripts direct to the Polytechnic. Candidates offered admission must present terminal reports showing completion of the 12 or 24 months industrial work experience before they would be registered.

B. NATIONAL DIPLOMA (EVENING/WEEKEND) – 3 YEARS
1. GENERAL MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates with one of the following qualifications may be considered for admission into the ND programme:

1. SSC/WBSC/NABTEC/NECO with credit passes in four or five subjects relevant to the programme obtained at not more than two sittings
2. A pass at the final examination of the Pre-ND of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri.

10. Secretarial Administration (SA)

Minimum Requirements: Credit passes in English Language and any three subjects from Business Methods, Commerce, Economics, Typewriting, Shorthand, Principles of Accounts, Office Practice, Secretarial Duties, Government, Mathematics, History, Literature in English, Geography, Christian/Islamic Religious Studies, any Science Subject/Health Science, any Language. A pass in Mathematics is required.

SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (SET)

1. Electrical/Electronics Engineering (EE)
   Minimum Requirements: Credit passes in Mathematics, Physics and two other subjects at least one of which must include Chemistry, Biology/Agric Science and Engineering Drawing. A pass in English Language is required.
2. ii. Computer Science (CS)
   Minimum Requirements: Four O/Level credits in Mathematics, Physics, English Language and any other from: Statistics, Geography, Further Maths, Chemistry, Economics/Commerce, Biology/Agric Science, Government/History, Technical Drawing.
3. Mechanical Engineering (ME)
   O/L papers with a pass in English Language and four Credits in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry/Agric. Science/Biology and one other subject.

SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES (SIAS)

1. Library Science (LS)
   Minimum Requirements: Credit passes in English Language and three other subjects, with passes in Mathematics and one science Subject.
2. Statistics (STA)
   Minimum Requirements: Four O/Level credits in Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry/Biology and any two of Statistics, Geography, Further Maths, Chemistry, Economics, Biology/Agric Science, Technical Drawing. A pass in English Language is required.

C. PRE-NATIONAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES (PRE-ND) 1 YEAR
PRE-ND SCIENCE IS CO-ORDINATED IN THE SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL SCIENCES

a) GENERAL MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Candidates for the Pre-ND programmes should have completed either a full Secondary School or Technical College Education and should possess a minimum of:

1. SSC/NECO pass in four/five subjects relevant to the proposed ND programme OR
2. The WAEC/City and Guilds Part II Craft Certificate and the Federal Craft Certificate in the relevant Engineering or Building Trade. The Federal Craft Certificate Examination results should include credit passes in Mathematics, Technical Drawing/Social Science, English Language and Physics/Chemistry. OR
3. NABTEC/WBSC passes in four subjects relevant to the proposed ND programme, OR
4. Any other qualification deemed to be equivalent to those stated in (i.) – (iii.) above.

SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (SET)

1. Agricultural Engineering (AE)
   Passes in Mathematics, Physics, Biology/Agric Science, Chemistry. A pass in English Language is required.
2. Civil Engineering (CE)
   Passes in Mathematics, Physics and two other subjects, at least one of which must include Chemistry, Biology/Agric Science and Engineering Drawing. A pass in English Language is required.

SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY (SEDT)

1. Architecture (AR)
   Passes in Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry and any two from: Biology/Agric Science, Geography, Economics, Religious Knowledge, Technical Drawing. A pass in English Language is required.
2. Building Technology (BT)
   Passes in Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry and any two from: Economics, Technical Drawing/Art, Wood Work/Metal Work, Biology/Agric Science, English Language, Social Studies, Building Construction and Geography. A pass in English Language is required.
3. Estate Management (EM)
   Passes in English Language and three other subjects, including Mathematics, a Basic Science (i.e. any one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and any one of Geography, Economics, Biology/Agric Science, Physics, Chemistry, Fine Art, Technical Drawing, Literature in English, Wood Work, Metal Work, Basic Electricity, Accounts, Commerce, History/Government
4. Land Surveying (SV)
   Passes in Mathematics, Physics and any two from: Further Mathematics/Statistics, Chemistry, Geography, Technical Drawing/Fine Art, Literature in English/English Language, Economics/Government, any other science subject. A pass in English Language is required.
5. Quantity Surveying (QS)
   Passes in Mathematics and any three from: Physics, Chemistry, Metal Work, Geography, Technical Drawing/Art, Wood Work, Building Construction, Economics/Mathematics, Biology/Agric Science. A pass in English Language is required.
6. Town and Regional Planning (TR)
   Passes in Mathematics, a Science subject and two other subjects chosen from: English Language, Economics, Geography, Art/Technical Drawing, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology/Agric Science, History/Government. A pass in English Language is required.

SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES (SIAS)

1. Library Science (LS)
   Passes in English Language and three other subjects. A pass in Mathematics and one Science Subject is required.
2. Science Technology (ST)
   Passes in Mathematics and any three subjects from: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Agric Science and Economics/Geography. A pass in English Language is required.

D. CERTIFICATE COURSES: (WEEKEND ONLY) - 1 YEAR

II CHOICE OF PROGRAMME
Candidates are advised to ensure that their programmes of first and second choices are selected from Departments where they meet the entry requirements. The programme should be clearly indicated. Candidates should also note that the number of available places in any of the programes is limited. The possession of the minimum entry qualifications therefore, does not necessarily guarantee admission.

A minimum of four passes including Mathematics and English Language at SSC/GCE/NECO/NABTEC/TCII (OR EQUIVALENT) OBTAINED AT NOT MORE THAN TWO SITTINGS. Candidates with JSSC with not less than certified fiuve years working experience in related fields will be considered. For Secretarial Administration a pass in Mathematics is not mandatory.

2. Advanced Certificate Programmes:

Entry Qualifications

(a) A minimum of four passes in relevant subjects obtained in not more than two sittings in SSC/GCE/NECO/NABTEC/TC II, or equivalent, two of which must be at credit level. A credit in Engllish Language and a pass in Mathematics and required

(b) Relevant Polytechnic certificate in programmes listed in (AI) above.

B. SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

1. Certificate Programmes in :

Electrical Installation Work and Regulation; Electrical Installation. Design and Draughting, Radio and TV servicing and installation. Telecommunication, Machine Tool Practice. Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration, Vehicle Maintenance.

Duration - 1 academic year

Entry Qualifications:
Any of:

(i) Trade tests I and II with two years full apprenticeship of
industrial Experience.

(iii) SSC/GCE/NECO/NABTEC with passes in 4 relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

(iv) JSSC with 3 years relevant industrial experience or apprenticeship.

(v) Artisans with a minimum of 5 years working experience in the relevant field.

3. Advanced Certificate Programme in;

Installation work and Regulation Electrical design and draughting, Radio and TV Serving and Installation; Telecommunication; Machine Tool Practice, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration; Vehicle Maintenance.

Duration - 1 academic year

Entry Qualifications

(i) Possession of the Polytechnic Certificate in relevant programmes as listed in (BI) above or other certificates considered by the Polytechnic as equivalent.

(ii) A minimum of City and Guild Craft or WAEC Technical Part in the relevant field.


C. SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

2. Certificate Programmes in:

Architectural Draughtsmanship; Architectural Modelling, Techniques; Building Technology; Quantity Surveying, Land Surveying, Housing and Transportation, Landscape Planning and Town Planning Model Making. Town Planning/Design, Public Utilities and Services, Tourism and Recreation Planning.

Duration - 1 academic year

Entry Qualifications:

(i) A minimum of four passes including g English Language in
SSC/GCE/NECO/NABTEC/TC II obtained not more than two sittings.

(II) Certificates with JSSC or equivalent and with not less than five years working experience in relevant fields will be considered.

(i) A minimum of four passes including credit in English Language in SSC/GCEE/NECO/NABTEC/TC II obtained at not more than two sittings.

(ii) For computer, Candidates with JSSC PLUS acceptable 5 years relevant working experience may be considered.

Mass Communication

(ii) Four passes of which three must be at credit levels; including English Language obtained at not more than two sittings in SSC/GCE/NECO/NABTEC/TC II.
